In 1952, MGM created one of the most hit American musicals, Singin' In the Rain. The musical is still a huge success today and is often imitated through dance performances. Usually musicals are made from Broadway shows into film, but Singin' In the Rain was purposely made just for film only. Gene Kelly starred in the film, as well as co-directed with Stanley Donen. The musical has a wonderful story line, dancing, up-beat music and of course, singing in the rain.

In 1951, Kelly was given a special Academy Award for all of his multiple talents as a dancer, singer, actor, director, and a choreographer. He wasn't even nominated for an Oscar for Singin' In the Rain. Debbie Reynolds, co-star to Kelly in the film, said that Kelly taught her so much, not just dancing, but how to love your work and the discipline that goes with it.

Ironically, the only two original songs that were composed for the film were "Make em' laugh" and "Moses". Good thing Gene Kelly decided on to stick with "singin' in the rain" for the film to make it a hit and the title of the movie. The movie cost $2.5 million running over $600,000 in budget for the film.

As most of us know, Kelly didn't want to always dance. He was actually very passionate about baseball and a huge fan of the Pittsburg Pirates. His dream, as a kid, was to play short stop for them when he got older. His mother pushed him into dance, and for that America has thanked him for bringing entertainment and dancing to film.
